Uruguay

Film Locations. Spanish colonial cities, coastal towns, modern architecture, undiscovered forests and rivers, parks, lagoons, lighthouses, white sand beaches including the world class beach resort of Punta Del Este. Uruguay doubles for a variety of American and European looks.

Permits. No extraordinary restrictions or rules apply. Permitting in Uruguay is a very straightforward process requiring only 48 hours for most locations. Shutting streets can take up to a week.

When to shoot? Summer is from December to March and offers long sunny shoot days with cool nights. Uruguay has a temperate climate, with mild summers and winters. Many businesses close during Carnival Week and during Easter.

For monthly weather statistics please see here.

Please contact us for more specific weather and sun path information.

Costs. Uruguay has one of the most competitive per shoot day costs in the world. Favorable exchange rate. Much more cost effective to shoot in Uruguay directly rather than via Argentina. On average Uruguay is about 30% lower than Brazil or Mexico, 20% lower than Argentina or South Africa.

Talent is non-union and buyouts are negotiable. Day rates are very reasonable and negotiated on a personal basis.

Main costs and rules for talent buyouts for various regions:

Leading actor:
Worldwide US$7.500
Latin America (from Mexico to the Patagonia)
US$ 3.350

Co-staring:

Latin America (from Mexico to the Patagonia)
US$ 2.600

Uruguay has mainly European and Latin looks. Blonde, Asian, African, East Indian and Amerindian looks are best brought in from abroad. Uruguay's close proximity to the more mulicultural production centre of Buenos Aires allows easy access to that talent pool should you ever need to look further.

Creative talent. Uruguay has a rather limited pool of local directors, directors of photography and stills photographers.

Please contact us for recommended directors, DoP's and photographers for your project.

Crews are also non-union. We package deals. Rates and hours of work are negotiable and always flexible to budgetary requirements. Heads of department all speak fluent English. Uruguayan crews are experienced in servicing international work and have a reputation for being friendly and hard working. Some crews are best brought in from abroad such as stylists and wardrobe.

Fringes. No hidden extras. We pay crew the day rate and crew contribute to their own medical and accident insurance.

Premiums. No 6th or 7th day, weekend, night or holiday premiums with crew or talent. Uruguay works on a 12 hour shoot day (with 1 hour for lunch). Time and a half after that.

Equipment. Good stock of basic locally available equipment including Alexa cameras, remote heads and steadicam. Technocranes can be brought in from nearby Buenos Aires and more specialised equipment is easily brought in from the US or Europe. The main equipment house in Montevideo is:

Musitelli

Art department and set construction are up to international standards.

Studios.
They do exist but are not Uruguay's strong point.

Backlots. At present no backlots exist in Uruguay.

Tax Incentives. There are no tax incentives for feature films or commercials shooting in Uruguay.

Film Stock. Both Fuji and Kodak are available locally.

Post Production. Uruguay has a lab so there is no need to develop and transfer in Buenos Aires:

Cinergia

Visas and Work Permits. Only certain countries need visas and there is no need for work permits. Contact your local Uruguayan embassy or representative for more information.
