Solomon Islands

Film Locations.
The Solomon Islands is a nation in Melanesia, east of Papua New Guinea, consisting of nearly one thousand islands. Rennel Island is the world’s largest uplifted coral island and is home to numerous plants and animals that are endemic to the island. Lake Tenggano is found there, the largest fresh water lake in the south pacific, and home to about 200 islands. The lake is also host to a number of rare orchids. The Solomon Islands are also known for their rainforests, beaches, variety of tropical flora, waterfalls including the spectacular double-sided Mataniko falls, a long island bridge, and several active and dormant volcanoes, reef diving and surfing.

Permits. Most locations are possible given time, money and the right approach.

When to shoot? Long shoot days all year around. The islands ocean-equatorial climate is very humid throughout the year. June through August is the cooler period. November through April bring more frequent rainfall and occasional squalls or cyclones.

For monthly weather statistics please see here.

Please contact us for more specific weather and sun path information.

Costs. Locations and talent costs are inexpensive but since no filming infrastructure exists on the islands all crew and equipment must be brought in from abroad.

Talent is non-union and buyouts are negotiable. Day rates are very reasonable and negotiated on a personal basis.

Casting facilities are undeveloped in the Soloman Islands so street casting is required.

People on the Solomon Islands are ethnically Melanesian. There are very few non-Melanesian looks available locally so those need to be brought in from abroad.

Creative talent. The Solomon Islands have no pool of local directors, directors of photography and stills photographers.

Please contact us for recommended directors, DoP's and photographers for your project.

Crews and Equipment. All need to be flown in.

Art department and set construction are very minimal.

Studios and Backlots don't exist.

Tax Incentives. There are no tax incentives for feature films or commercials shooting in the Soloman Islands.

Film Stock and Post Production. None available locally.

Visas and Work Permits. Only certain countries need visas and there is no need for work permits. Contact your local Solomon Islands embassy / representative for more information.
