Romania

Film Locations. Castles and palaces, classic interiors, old European villages, Byzantine monasteries, snowy mountains, white sand beaches, forests and rivers, modern subways, old industrial estates, off-shore oil rigs. Romania has a wealth of extraordinary undiscovered locations.

Permits. No extraordinary restrictions or rules apply. Permitting in Romania is a very straightforward process requiring only 48 hours for most locations. Shutting streets in Bucharest can take up to one week.

When to shoot? The best warm weather is between April and October. The best snow can be found between November and March.

For monthly weather statistics please see here.

Please contact us for more specific weather and sun path information.

Costs. On the whole Romania is a very cost competitive option. Standard shoot day costs are on average 20% less than Czech or Hungary. Romania offers a great variety of locations in close proximity to each other. Romania does not yet trade in the Euro.

Talent is non-union and buyouts are negotiable. Day rates are very reasonable and negotiated on a personal basis. Talent costs are on average 30% less than Czech or Hungary.

The main costs of talent are as follows:

Local Talent (actor) per day: 200-800 EUROS
Local Crowd per day: 22-25 EUROS
Super Model per day: 1,000-2,000 EUROS
A Class Model per day: 500-800 EUROS
B Class Model per day: 300-500 EUROS

There is a good pool of Caucasian looking local talent available and many expats living in Romania are also with casting agencies. Although there are plenty of women to choose from, there is a shortage of men with blonde hair. The local gypsy community doubles well for Middle Eastern looking people, but there is a rather limited selection of Indian, African and Asian looks. Romania's close proximity to other major European production centres allows easy access to those pools of talent should you ever need to look further.

Creative talent. Romania has a rather limited pool of local directors, directors of photography and stills photographers. Its close proximity to other major European production centres allows easy access to those pools of creative talent should you ever need to look further.

Please contact us for recommended directors, DoP's and photographers for your project.

Crews are also non-union. Crews are good, hard working and flexible with overtime / turn around times. Heads of department all speak fluent English. Crew costs are on average 25% less than Czech or Hungary.

Fringes. No hidden extras. Crew pays fringes separately through their own companies.

Premiums.
Romania works on a twelve-hour day including one hour break for lunch with overtime rate negotiated on a case by case basis. No 6th or 7th day, weekend, night or holiday premiums with crew or talent.

Equipment. All the standard equipment is available locally in Romania and anything additional can be easily brought in from major European production centres. Romania offers both Panavision and Arri equipment. Panalight Italy has established an office in Romania and stock most of what you typically need including a new techno-crane. For car commercials specialized lights are brought in from Germany. Wescam for helicopter can be brought in from the UK. Helium Balloon lights from Austria. Motion control from Budapest.
