Papua New Guinea

Film Locations.
Papua New Guinea is a country in the South Pacific occupying the eastern half of the island of New Guinea and numerous other offshore islands. The country is also one of the world's least explored, culturally and geographically, and many undiscovered species of plants and animals are thought to exist in the interior of Papua New Guinea. A spine of mountains runs the length of the island of New Guinea, forming a populous highlands region. Papua New Guinea occasionally sees snowfalls in this area. There is a also a glacier. Dense tropical rainforest can be found in the lowland and coastal areas. Papua New Guinea also has a very large wetland area around the coastal rivers. The country is also surrounded by coral reefs. There are a number of active volcanoes and eruptions are relatively frequent.

Permits. Most locations are possible given time, money and the right approach.

When to shoot? Long shoot days all year around. December to March is the wet season, although occasional rain falls year-round. While Port Moresby, the capital, and other towns on the coast are quite hot in the summer months, temperatures are considerably cooler in the highlands.

For monthly weather statistics please see here.

Please contact us for more specific weather and sun path information.

Costs. Locations and talent costs are inexpensive but since no filming infrastructure exists all crew and equipment must be brought in from abroad. Reaching any locations outside of Port Moresby will require the additional costs of using a plane or boat.

Talent is non-union and buyouts are negotiable. Day rates are very reasonable and negotiated on a personal basis.

Casting facilities are undeveloped in Papua New Guinea so street casting is required.

Papua New Guinea has over 850 indigenous languages and at least as many traditional societies, out of a population of just under 6 million. It is also very rural, with only 18 per cent of its people living in urban centres. There are very few non-Melanesian looks available locally so those do need to be brought in from abroad.

Creative talent. Papua New Guinea has no pool of local directors, directors of photography and stills photographers.

Please contact us for recommended directors, DoP's and photographers for your project.

Crews and Equipment. All need to be flown in.

Art department and set construction is very minimal.

Studios and Backlots don't exist.

Tax Incentives. There are no tax incentives for feature films or commercials shooting in Papua New Guinea.

Film Stock and Post Production. None available locally.

Visas and Work Permits. Only certain countries need visas and there is no need for work permits. Contact your local Papua New Guinean embassy / representative for more information.

Transportation Infrastructure. Transport in Papua New Guinea is heavily limited by the country's mountainous terrain and dense rainforest. Port Moresby, is not linked by road to any of the other major towns and many remote villages can only be reached by light aircraft. Qantas, Air Niugini and Airlines of PNG service direct flights from Australia, Solomon Islands, Fiji, Singapore, Philipines and Hong Kong.
