Nepal

Film Locations. Himalayas - Annapurna and the world's highest peak, Mount Everest. Kathmandu. Durbar Square, Monkey Temple and Basantapur Tower. Monasteries. Pokhahra. Lumbini - the birth place of Buddha. Hills, low land plains and jungles. Rivers and lakes. National parks.

Permits.
Nepal has a film friendly and streamlined permitting process. There are restrictions on some holy temples mainly in the Kathmandu area. Permits typically take about 2 weeks to process but this can be expedited in some cases.

When to shoot? The best months to film high altitude mountains are from March to May and September to December.
The best months to film in Nepal’s lowlands are from January to April and October to November. Kathmandu and Pokhahra can be filmed all year round, however June to August is the monsoon season where most of the rain falls. The rest of the year is dry.

For monthly weather statistics please see here.

Please contact us for more specific weather and sun path information.

Costs.
Locations, local talent and support crew are inexpensive but since little to no filming infrastructure exists all key crew and equipment must be brought in from abroad. Filming requiring considerable and logistically complicated travel from Kathmandu can also add considerably to the cost of a shoot.

Talent is non-union and buyouts are negotiable. Nepal has over 103 distinct castes and ethnic groups. Nepalis have either predominately Indian or Mongolian / Tibetan features. Some Caucasian looks are also available. All other talent looks need to be brought in from abroad.

Creative talent. Nepal has no pool of local directors, directors of photography and stills photographers.

Please contact us for recommended directors, DoP's and photographers for your project.

Crews are non-union. Key crew should be brought in from abroad.

Fringes and Premiums. No hidden extras. No fixed premiums apply. We package deals for local crew / talent. As a general rule, Nepal works on a 10 hour day. After that time and a half is charged.

Equipment. Some basic equipment is available locally otherwise all other equipment must be brought in from abroad.

Art department and set construction is very basic.

Studios and backlots. None exist at present.

Tax Incentives. At present there are no tax incentives for foreign commercials or films shooting in Nepal.

Film Stock. Must bring from abroad.

Post Production. No labs exist locally. Post abroad.

Visas and Work Permits. Entry is subject to regulations from country of origin. Contact your local Nepali embassy or representative for more information.
