Mauritius
Film Locations. Inland Mauritius has many beautiful forests, national parks, tree lined avenues, mountains, waterfalls and rivers. The coast has some beautiful beaches although many of the better ones are part of established resorts. The main towns and much of the French colonial architecture are run down making for interesting backdrops.
Permits. Applications need to be made well in advance of shoot days. Most locations are possible given time, money and the right approach.
When to shoot? Mauritius has a tropical climate which remains warm and relatively dry throughout the year. Tropical storms and hurricanes may occur between June and November. Mauritius tends to get more rain inland than on the coast.

Costs. Locations, local talent and support crew are inexpensive but since little to no filming infrastructure exists all key crew and equipment must be brought in from abroad. Johannesburg is the closest major production centre.
Talent is non-union and buyouts are negotiable. Mauritians are mostly of Indian and Creole descent. Some Caucasian and Chinese looks also exist. All other talent looks need to be brought in from abroad. There are no real casting companies in Mauritius. Street casting is common. Best to bring in lead talent from abroad.
Creative talent. Mauritius has no pool of local directors, directors of photography and stills photographers.

Fringes and Premiums. No hidden extras. No fixed premiums apply. We package deals for local crew / talent.
Equipment. Some basic lighting gear can be found locally. There are also video companies that have some gear. All professional camera and grip equipment needs to be brought in from abroad. Johannesburg is the closest major production centre.
Art department and set construction is very basic. Anything specific needs to be brought in from abroad.
Studios and backlots. None exist at present.
Tax Incentives. At present there are no tax incentives for foreign
commercials or films shooting in Mauritius.
Film Stock. Must bring from abroad.
Post Production. No labs exist locally. Post abroad.
Visas and Work Permits. Entry is subject to regulations from country of origin. Contact your local Mauritian embassy or representative for more information.
Transportation Infrastructure. Main roads are up to international standards. The traffic in Mauritius can be quite bad. It takes at least 2.5 hours from the top to the bottom of the island and about 1 hour across if the traffic is good. Several international airlines service flights to Mauritius.
