Film Locations. The Maldives lie south south-west of India. They consist of approximately 1,196 coral islands. The highest point is only 2.4 metres above sea level. Maldives are famed for their paradise like locations - turquoise blue waters, coral reefs, white sand beaches, luxury resorts.

Permits are a quick and easy process.

When to shoot? The temperature of the Maldives is hot throughout the year and although the humidity is relatively high, the constant sea breezes help to keep the air moving. December to April is the dry season. The wet season runs between April and October, when strong winds can also be expected. November and April offer the best water visibility for underwater filming.

Costs. Overall the Maldives are quite an expensive place to shoot but the locations are second to none. Talent will likely need to be brought in from abroad. Since no filming infrastructure exists on the islands all crew and equipment must be brought in from abroad. Post needs to be done abroad. The Maldives have no local agriculture so most food needs to be imported and is expensive as a result. Local transport is expensive. The dry season is also the height of the tourist season when hotels are very expensive and often sold out.

Talent is non-union and buyouts are always negotiable. Day rates are reasonable and negotiated on a personal basis.

Casting facilities are undeveloped in the Maldives. Street casting is possible.

Locals look Indian / Sri Lankan. There are very few foreign looks available locally so those need to be brought in from abroad.

Creative talent. The Maldives have no pool of local directors, directors of photography and stills photographers.

Crews and Equipment. All need to be flown in from India or Sri Lanka. Locals are not that familiar with handling film work.

Fringes. No hidden extras.

Art department and set construction are very minimal. Most likely need to bring in from abroad.

Studios and Backlots don't exist.

Tax Incentives. There are no tax incentives for shooting foreign feature films or commercials in Maldives.

Film Stock and Post Production. None available locally.

Visas and Work Permits. Only certain countries need visas and there is no need for work permits. Contact your local Maldivian embassy / representative for more information.

Transportation Infrastructure. Locally, getting around by boat is the best option. Several international airlines service flights to the Maldives.
